Pittsburgh Rises as One: #ShutDownBerks

RSVP

Description

For week 3 of #PittsburghRisesAsOne, Bend the Arc: Pittsburgh’s socially distanced month of online organizing, we are partnering with Casa San Jose to #ShutDownBerks!

You may have already heard about the Berks County Family Detention Center, which is one of three facilities in the United States where immigrant families are detained — sometimes for over a year. With COVID19, families at Berks are in the most vulnerable situation. This is a facility with years of medical neglect and outbreaks, and families there don’t have a say or control over their own health care.

For years there have been documented abuses at Berks. This evidence gives Governor Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services the power to close the facility. So this week we will be calling Governor Wolf to demand he #ShutDownBerks.

Join us on Wednesday, May 20th at 7 PM for a Zoom webinar to learn about and discuss the issues at Berks. That will prepare us for a Day of Action on Friday, May 22nd. We’ll be driving as many phone calls as possible to the Governor’s office. Zoom call information will be provided upon RSVP.

We look forward to seeing you Wednesday!
